What To Do After A Car Accident

Important Steps to Take Following a Car Accident

Examine yourself and your fellow passengers for injuries. Some injuries are not immediately apparent. If you are unsure whether you have been injured, call an ambulance.
Look for any signs of fire or sparks. Move away from the vehicle if you see smoke or smell gasoline. You may notice dust in the air if your vehicle has airbags.

Do not obstruct traffic. If your accident is minor, move your car away from the road to a safer location.

Maintain your cool and control your emotions. It is natural to be shocked or enraged following an accident. Don’t point the finger at the other driver.

In many states, a police report is required if someone is injured or the damage exceeds a certain amount. It is also possible that the insurance company will request it. Even if you were not at fault, the report is important.

Obtain the contact information of other drivers and witnesses. Take other drivers’ phone numbers, email addresses, and insurance policy information. You can take a picture of these with your phone’s camera and save it for later use.

Avoid roadside bargaining. You don’t want to make a promise not to file an insurance claim or involve the police.

Take pictures of the accident scene and the damage to both vehicles from as many angles as possible with your cell phone camera. Take note of any skid marks or evidence of the other driver’s negligence.

Even if you are not at fault, contact your insurance provider and report the incident. The number will be on your insurance card.

Never leave an accident scene without exchanging contact information with other drivers. If police are on their way, you will have to wait, or criminal charges may be brought against you.
